Bio

Nicholas Huenefeld became the  Sports Information Director at Owens Community College in January of 2011.

The first SID at Owens Community College, Huenefeld has been the catalyst behind the vastly improved promotion of Owens athletics. He was responsible for starting game recaps and re-formatting the player bios on the old Owens athletics website, which was ran through the college's website. Then, once Rudy Yovich took over as athletic director in October of 2011, Huenefeld worked with him to design and build the current athletics website, www.owensexpress.com.

Since his hiring, Huenefeld has also been researching the year-by-year history of each sport at Owens. This has included library research, meeting with former Owens student-athletes and coaches, internet research and campus research. The results of this work (historical rosters, year-by-year records, stats, team photos, etc.) can be found by clicking on the archive section of each sport page.

Huenefeld is primarily responsible for updating and maintaining the website, as well as the operation of the athletic department's social media accounts - including Facebook, Twitter, Instragram, YouTube and ISSUU. The Facebook page, with over 1,200 likes, was created once he took over SID duties. The Twitter page, which is nearing 700 followers, was created in December 2011, and the Instragram page debuted early in 2014. More recently, improvements to the athletic department's YouTube page, here, have taken form and most old athletics publications have been archived digitally online on ISSUU.

In 2014-15, Huenefeld continued to improve the athletic department's live streaming capabilities. After broadcasting men's and women's basketball home contests during the second half of the 2013-14 season, the athletic department broadcasted home volleyball events, as well as most home and away men's and women's basketball games. During the basketball season, Huenefeld authored an upgrade to HD streaming for all home events.

Via StatCrew, Huenefeld serves as the statistician for women's basketball, men's basketball, softball and baseball. He got his start at Owens as the statistician for both basketball teams in January 2005.

In terms of student-athlete promotion, 16 student-athletes have been named a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-American since Huenefeld started. By comparison, Owens had 14 NJCAA All-Americans from 2004-11. Academically, 25 student-athletes and six teams have earned academic honors from the NJCAA since he started. Furthermore, there has also been five WBCA All-Americans, two NSCAA All-Americans and one NFCA All-American from Owens over the past three seasons. In March 2013, Huenefeld helped get a dunk by men's basketball player James Kelly featured on ESPN Sportscenter's Top 10 and over 100 student-athletes have signed with four-year schools to continue their playing careers since he was hired.

Huenefeld also ran intramural basketball for three years. Internationally known country star Luke Bryan participated in a game in Feb. 2013.

At the 2014-15 year-end athletics banquet, Huenefeld was presented with the Owens Community College Appreciation Award for "recognition in outstanding service to Owens Express Athletics."

Away from Owens, Huenefeld serves as the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) Sports Information Director (www.occac.org). At various times, he has held positions as a sports writer for The Sentinel Tribune newspaper in Bowling Green, Ohio, the Toledo Free Press newspaper in Toledo, Ohio and The Press newspaper in Millbury, Ohio.

Huenefeld is a 2010 graduate of Bowling Green State University, where he majored in sport communication and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education. While there, he completed internships with the Lake Erie Monarchs summer collegiate wood bat baseball league, Lake High School in Millbury, Ohio, The Bluffton News newspaper in Bluffton, Ohio and the Owens Community College athletic department.

Prior to BGSU, Huenefeld completed the first two years of his bachelor's degree at Owens. While there, he was also heavily involved as a student at Owens - both in and out of the athletic department. In addition to his statistical duties with the basketball programs, he was a student worker in the athletic department and the Student Health and Activities Center. At different times, he served as an announcer and statistician for the softball program.

Outside of athletics, he served as the college's student government president and editor in chief of the student newspaper, The Outlook. During his time in student government, he was selected to make speeches in front of the Ohio House of Representatives and former Ohio governor Bob Taft.

Also, as a student at Owens, Huenefeld appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in Nov. 2006 as part of the show's Don't Try This At Home segment. He has also appeared in two Ripley's Believe It or Not! publications - "Ripley's Believe It or Not: Planet Eccentric" and "Ripley's Believe It or Not: Prepare to be Shocked."
