Art Johnson is in his 18th season as head coach of the Owens men's soccer program.
In 2014, the Owens men finished 12-8-1 overall and 4-2 (2nd Place) in the OCCAC. The team advanced to the Region XII tournament quarterfinals and produced five All-OCCAC players and three All-Region XII players. Among those players, Ahmad Jarrar was named the OCCAC's Offensive Player of the Year and Matt Almester was named the OCCAC's Midfielder of the Year.
In 2013, Johnson led the Express to a 15-6-1 record and the program's first appearance in the Region XII tournament championship game since 2007. They also won the program's most games in a single season since 2007 and their 15 wins was the third most in a single season.
Following the season ending Region XII tournament championship game loss to Cincinnati State, the Express had five players selected All-OCCAC, three selected All-Region XII and Troy Watson was named the OCCAC Defensive Player of the Year. Freshman Bjion Campbell was named to the Region XII all-tourney team.
In 2012, the Express finished 14-6-1 as Johnson led the program to its first ever OCCAC championship while being named OCCAC Coach of the Year for the fifth time (2002, 2003, 2006, 2011). The season came to an end with a loss in the Region XII semifinals to Cincinnati State. The team did, however, achieve the program's fourth highest win total in a single season, and they captured the Lincoln Land Tournament Championship.
Since beginning the program in 1998, Johnson-led teams have compiled a 193-137-19 overall record. Through the 2014-15 school year, Johnson has coached two NJCAA Athletic All-Americans (Glenroy Miller - 2012 and Sean Bucknor - 2006 and 2007), 11 NJCAA Academic All-Americans and one NSCAA Athletic All-American.
Additionally, Johnson has produced 73 All-OCCAC honorees, 51 All-Region XII recipients, six OCCAC Offensive Player of the Year winners, five OCCAC Defensive Player of the Year honorees, three OCCAC Players of the Year, and two OCCAC Midfielder of the Year.
In 2012, the Express swept every OCCAC award possible. Moreover, Johnson coached the three highest vote getters in OCCAC postseason award voting in Glenroy Miller, Nickyle Webber and Juavanie Cole.
Personally, Johnson was named Region XII Coach of the Year in 2005.
Prior to Owens, Johnson was a 19-year veteran of the St. John's Jesuit High School soccer program. In 12 seasons as head coach, he compiled a 150-51-20 record. He was named the 1997 Division I Ohio private school Coach of the Year.
Johnson is a native of Rochester, N.Y., and played soccer at Monroe Community College in 1975. He graduated from Ohio University in 1978, where he captained the team as a senior. The Toledo resident returned as an assistant the following season.
