2017-18 OCCAC Men's Basketball News
The OCCAC handed out its final Basketball Player of the Week awards of the 2017-18 season, honoring the District Tournament MVP performances of Brenda Pennington (Owens) and Quintin Dove (Cuyahoga). Both Owens Women’s Basketball and Cuyahoga Men’s Basketball qualified for the NJCAA D-II National Tournament. No D-III OCCAC teams competed last week.
Three OCCAC member schools have advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament in their respective basketball divisions. The fifth-ranked Express of Owens Community College topped No. 9 Sinclair, 73-64, to earn their spot in the 16-team NJCAA D-II Women’s National Tournament. On the men’s side, Cuyahoga and Columbus State are battling for national titles in the D-II and D-III Men’s National Tournaments, respectively.
The 2017-18 OCCAC Men’s Basketball All-Conference Teams have been announced, highlighted by Cuyahoga’s Quintin Dove earning Player of the Year recognition. LiDonta Hicks-Gentry of Sinclair received the second most votes to join Dove on the OCCAC All-Conference First Team alongside Mario Young (Columbus State), Devon Robinson (Cuyahoga), Gabe Simpson (Owens) and Chris Byrd (Columbus State).
Five OCCAC men's basketball teams will compete in the NJCAA D-II Men's Basketball District 11 Tournament for advancement into the National Tournament Sweet 16. Action begins Tuesday night (March 6) with No. 4-seed Lakeland facing No. 5-seed Edison State.
The final regular season OCCAC Basketball Players of the Week honorees have been selected and three conference institutions are represented. Division II winners are Lakeland’s Armani Jackson and LiDonta Hicks-Gentry of Sinclair. Allyse Rutter and Mario Young both led Columbus State to postseason victories to earn the D-III accolades.

Columbus State Community College swept the D-III OCCAC Basketball Player of the Week laurels for the third straight week with Destiny Wooten and Matthew Gierhart earning back-to-back honors while Lakeland Community College’s Armani Jackson and LiDonta Hicks-Gentry of Sinclair Community College were named the D-II recipients.

Brianna Williams (Lakeland) and Gabe Simpson (Owens) have earned OCCAC D-II Basketball Player of the Week honors for the week of Jan. 29-Feb. 4 while Columbus State’s Antishay Rahim and Mario Young picked up the D-III accolades.
Devon Robinson averages 13.1 points per game. His 11.3 rebounds are sixth in the nation and his 3.4 steals are fifth. Robinson, a 6-3 forward, had a career night against conference rival Lorain Community College earlier this month when he scored 38 points, collected 14 rebounds, nine steals and five assists. His effort earned him National Junior College Athletic Association Player of the Week.
Four student-athletes, representing four different schools, have been selected as the OCCAC Basketball Players of the Week for Jan. 22-28. This week’s honorees are Dai’Shona Washington-Polk (D-II), Stephanie Newell (D-III), Isaiah Trice (D-II) and Zach Swain (D-III).
All final grades are in from the Fall semester and a ton of STUDENT-athletes from across the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference have earned Academic All-Conference honors. To qualify, a student-athlete must achieve a 3.30 GPA or higher while completing at least 12 credit hours.
This week’s Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) Basketball Players of the Week include two multiple-time winners (Amanda Schroeder and Mike Rell) alongside a pair first-time honorees (Stephanie Newell and Korey Joyner).
All four OCCAC basketball players of the week on January 15 are repeat customers this season, paced by Cuyahoga Community College’s Devon Robinson reeling in his fourth weekly accolade of 2017-18 and fifth of his career. Additional honorees this week include Amanda Schroeder of Sinclair Community College (D-II) and Lorain County Community College’s Hannah Oehlstrom and Mike Rell as the D-III recipients.

Clair Schmitmeyer of Edison State and Lakeland’s Aaron Pate were named the D-II players of the week on Monday (Jan. 8) while Destiny Wooten and Mario Young from Columbus State earned the D-III nod.
