Cincinnati, Ohio---Opening the season at home, Cincinnati State defeated Ancilla College (IN) by a score of 4-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Tyler Gumbert, a sophomore from Anderson, opened the Surge scoring in the 15th minute. Gumbert received a back heal pass from Mohamed Thiaw and delivered a strike to the back of the Ancilla net. Thiaw would cash in with a goal of his own in the 44th to give the Surge a 2-0 lead at the break.
Freshman forward Javier Meneses-Wallace put the Surge up 3-0 in the 52nd.
"We got off to a solid start offensively," Head Coach Mike Combs said. "Once we got up three, we kind of sat back and let Ancilla back into the game. We will learn from it."
Ancilla generated 5 of their 8 shots on net in the second half, finding the back of the net for the first time in the 55th minute. Cincinnati State's Juwon Akintunde halted the Charger comeback with a strike to put the Surge back up by 3 goals. Ancilla's Zahir Martinez scored in the 86th but it would be too little too late for a Charger comeback as Ancilla fell to 0-1-0 on the season.
Cincinnati State, which is currently ranked No. 7 in the NJCAA, take its 1-0-0 record on the road next weekend. The Surge take on CCBC-Essex on Saturday in Baltimore, MD followed by Sunday's match against Southern Maryland.
