Richmond, IN---The 2013 fall golf season kicked off today with great success as the Cincinnati State golf team placed first with a team score of 292 at the Indiana University-East Invitational held at Highland Lake Golf Course in Richmond, Indiana.
"Our guys came out and showed what they can do," Head Coach Scott Webb said. "We knew this would be a good team and our guys played like it today. It is our first step in the ultimate goal of contending for a national title this season."
The Surge were led by Matt "Chappy" Nickoson, who opened up his sophomore campaign with a tournament low and collegiate career best 70 (-2). Freshman Taylor Suggs followed with a 73 (+1). Evan Bryan, who returned to the team after taking a year off, shot 74 (+2). Battling the flu, freshman Blake Adkins rounded out the team score with a 75 (+3).
"I told myself a few days ago to start the season off right and go low," Nickoson said. "I came out and dominated the par 5s which allowed me to accomplish what I wanted."
Cincinnati State's score of 292 tied for the lowest in the program's history as the Surge cruised to a 27 stroke victory.
Overall team results from today's tournament:

2. IU-East - 319 total strokes
3. Miami - Hamilton - 321 total strokes
4. Ohio Christian - 328 total strokes
