Middletown, OH -- Cincinnati State freshmen golfers Matt Nickoson and Austin Kyle led the Surge golf team to a runner-up finish in the NJCAA Region XII Tournament held at Weatherwax Golf Course.
Playing the three round tournament on Weatherwax's Meadows & Woodside courses, Nickoson and Kyle tied for second place in individual play with net scores of 226.
Kyle propelled himself into contention with score of 72 (E) in Saturday's second round to go along with a 76(+4) and 78(+6). Nickoson shot consistent scores of 74 (+2) and a pair of 76s (+4).
Cincinnati State's freshmen tandem were narrowly defeated by Tyler Grant, who led Vincennes University (IN) to its second consecutive Region XII title with a 224. Grant posted scores of 75 (+3), 72 (E) and 77 (+5).
The low round of the tournament belonged to VU's Jackson Cowden, who posted a 71 (-1) on his way to a 4th place finish with a net score of 227.
"There was some impressive scoring throughout the tournament," said Cincinnati State head coach Scott Webb. "V.U. took it to another level this weekend. I think they have what it takes to go on and bring a national title back for the region."
As a team, Vincennes won decisively over Cincinnati State and Schoolcraft College (MI) after a final round score of 307 and a three round total of 915.
With the victory, Vincennes advances to the NJCAA National Tournament held at Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, New York.
