Kirtland, OH---The Owens Community College men's golf team clinched the OCCAC championship with two victories last weekend in the Lorain County and Lakeland Invitationals.
In the Lorain County Invitational, Brandon Hoelzer of Owens took home low score with a 73, while Darren Gessner of Owens (75) and Matt Nickoson of Cincinnati State (76) rounded out the top three.
As a team, Owens shot 304, while Columbus State (316), Cincinnati State (320), Lakeland (331) and Lorain County (339) rounded out the field.
In the Lakeland Invitational, Nickoson and Ash Alstadt of Columbus State earned low individual score with 72s, while Gessner, Pat Kaneekijipanukul of Lakeland and Jacob Stasiulewicz of Columbus State each shot 73s.
In team scores, Owens shot a 300, while Columbus State (305), Cincinnati State (309), Lakeland (324) and Lorain County (345) rounded out the field.
Notes
The OCCAC championship is the fourth overall for Owens since the program began officially in OCCAC play in 2005-06, and it is their first since 2008-09.
Owens has swept all five OCCAC tournaments thus far, with the final one (Owens Invitational) coming up on Sunday at Belmont Country Club. The teams will then play a Ryder Cup format event on Monday at Belmont. Only Sunday counts in the standings.
The race is tight at the top of the OCCAC individual standings heading into the final event. Hoelzer (73.60) is at the top, while Alstadt (74.20), Gessner (74.60), Nickoson (75.60) and Blaze Hogan of Owens (75.60) round out the top five. Luke Berger of Owens (76.00) is just outside the top five.
