Kash Blackwell scored 20 points to help spark Cuyahoga to a 77-72 upset win over No. 5 Sinclair in the semifinals of the NJCAA District 11 men's basketball tournament on Friday.

The Challengers, 19-13, advance to Saturday's 4:30 p.m. district championship game. Sinclair, the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference champions and ranked in the NJCAA Division II Top 10 most of the season, finished at 28-3.

The teams traded leads through most of the first half. Sinclair pulled ahead, 34-29, at intermission and led by eight points at the 14:23 mark of the second half.

Cuyahoga, which shot 62 percent in the second half, rallied to regain the lead at the 10 minute mark and kept Sinclair on the ropes the remainder of the contest.

Greg Smalley, with 18 points on 8-of-8 shooting from the field, complemented Blackwell's scoring. Rico Jones Jr. reached double figures with 13.

Deangelo Gates led Sinclair with 17 points, backed by Marcellous Washington's 14 and Manny Powell Jr.'s 13.

Inconsistent shooting--the Tartan managed just 36 percent from the field to Cuyahoga's 46 percent--hurt Sinclair. The Challengers posted a 51-35 rebounding advantage.

Rodney Willis poured in 29 points as No. 2 seed Columbus State outlasted No. 3 seed Lakeland 86-83 in overtime in the semifinals of the Region XII District 11 men's basketball tournament on Friday.

The Cougars (23-6) advance to Saturday's championship at 4:30 p.m. against No. 5 seed Cuyahoga. Lakeland's season ends at 18-13.

Outside of Willis, Nic Williams and Robert Caldwell chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively for Columbus State, while Lamarr Barnes pulled down 10 rebounds.

Lakeland, the tournament's defending champion, was led by 23 points from Frank Barber, although Chris Scott was a force inside with 17 points and 13 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass. Jay Thomas chipped in 16 points, as well, while Brooklyn Simms had 15 off the bench.

Lakeland led by four at halftime. At the end of regulation, Williams had hit a layup to put Columbus State up 73-70, but Scott made one of two at the foul line and Lakeland's Mike Smith was fouled while grabbing the rebound. He had to leave the game due to injury, and Simms stepped up to hit both free throws to knot the game up.

Columbus State's Donte Smith then missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the end of regulation.

In OT, Scott made a free throw for the first point, but Columbus State scored the next six points and held off Lakeland in the end.
