Spring Semester Starts with Four Award Recipients
The first full week of competition for 2020 brought a plethora of nominations for OCCAC Player of the Week and four student-athletes stood out above the rest. Armani Jackson (Lakeland) and Ronnie Hampton (Edison State) are the D-II winners while the Columbus State tandem of Melia Walder and Corey Baker earned D-III recognition.
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The first full week of competition for 2020 brought a plethora of nominations for OCCAC Player of the Week and four student-athletes stood out above the rest. Armani Jackson (Lakeland) and Ronnie Hampton (Edison State) are the D-II winners while the Columbus State tandem of Melia Walder and Corey Baker earned D-III recognition.
ARMANI JACKSON
Lakeland Community College | D-II Women’s Basketball Player of the Week
Jackson makes a return to the winner’s circle two years after corralling four weekly OCCAC honors during the 2017-18 season. She stuffed the stat sheet with 26.5 points, 13.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.0 steals per game in leading the Lakers to a pair of victories. Jackson took care of the ball as well, committing just two turnovers in 78 minutes of action. She posted a double-double in both contests, shooting a combined 17-of-33 (52%) from the floor.
RONNIE HAMPTON
Edison State Community College | D-II Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
Hampton picks up his second distinction of the season, also doing so on Dec. 2. The Chargers went 2-0 on the back of 20.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 3.0 steals per game from Hampton. He knocked down 50% (16-32) of his field goal attempts and 8-of-10 foul shots.
MELIA WALDER
Columbus State Community College | D-III Women’s Basketball Player of the Week
Walder was named the league’s player of the week 365 days ago on Jan. 14, 2019. Fast forward a year later, and she’s back after ripping down 38 rebounds in two Cougar wins last week. Walder hauled in 24 boards (10 offensive) against Clark State and nabbed 14 more against Lorain County. She also registered averages of 16.0 points, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals while converting on 10-of-21 (48%) field goals.
COREY BAKER
Columbus State Community College | D-III Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
Baker served as Columbus State’s most efficient offensive weapon, shooting 63% (10-16) from the floor including 3-of-5 from long range. The hot shooting led to 13.5 points/game in just 73 minutes logged during a pair of lopsided contests. He added 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists averages.
