No. 8 Owens Express Softball Captures Region XII District G Championship, Advances to Nationals

The No. 8-ranked Express softball team (39-3) captured the Region XII District G Championship with a 5-2 win over Kalamazoo Valley C.C. today.

Kristen Roznoski (Cardinal Stritch/Toledo, Ohio) singled leading off the bottom half of the first inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Alaina Haubert (Gibsonburg/Gibsonburg, Ohio) to put Owens up 1-0.

In the third, Ashleigh Whitacre (Central Catholic/Toledo, Ohio) lined a two-out RBI single to score Bridget Wolfe (Bellevue/Bellevue, Ohio) and put Owens up 2-0.

Then, Wolfe and Michelle Hollister (Airport/Newport, Mich.) hit back-to-back home runs to put the Express up 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning after the Express saw a 2-0 lead wiped out in the top half.

In the top of the sixth, KVCC put their leadoff batter on second following an error by Owens reliever Elizabeth Weber (Oak Harbor/Oak Harbor, Ohio). Following a groundout that moved the runner to third, play was suspended due to lightning and rain.

Action picked back up today as Jordan Ratliff (Summerfield/Petersburg, Mich.) re-entered. Ratliff got the first batter to ground out, and KVCC held the runner at third. Then, Ratliff got a fly out to Kelley Molloy (Whitmer/Toledo, Ohio) in left field to end the inning and keep the Express up 4-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, Allison Hausch (Bryan/Bryan, Ohio) lined a double to left center leading off. Morgan Gray (Clyde/Clyde, Ohio), who pinch ran for her, later scored on a wild pitch to put Owens up 5-2.

Ratliff then induced a ground out to short and a ground out to second before striking the final batter out looking to win the championship.

On Thursday, the Express defeated Jackson 3-1 to advance to the winner's bracket final. Then, they defeated Kalamazoo Valley in the winner's bracket final, 2-1 in eight innings, on Hausch's walk-off solo home run.

Kalamazoo Valley then advanced through the loser's bracket to take on Owens in the championship on Friday. In that matchup, KVCC defeated Owens 3-1 to force a second game. After the second game was suspended in the sixth inning due to weather, the Express captured the tournament title today.

Hausch and Haubert earned All-Region XII District G tournament team honors, while Ratliff was named the Region XII District G Tournament MVP.

Owens now advances to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Tournament in Normal, Ill. next week.

Hausch Sends Express Softball (38-2) into Region XII District G Title Game

The No. 8-ranked Express softball team is headed to the Region XII District G championship game after a walk-off home run by Allison Hausch (Bryan/Bryan, Ohio) to give Owens a 2-1 win over No. 19 Kalamazoo Valley C.C.

In a 1-1 game in the bottom of the eighth, Hausch hit a leadoff home run on a 1-2 count off Kalamazoo Valley's Sara Heath, who was 20-1 with a 1.11 ERA heading into the game.

Up to that point, the game was defined by three hits and an outfield assist. In the top of the fifth, Kalamazoo Valley's Kristen Olson hit a two out solo home run off Express starter Jordan Ratliff (Summerfield/Petersburg, Mich.) to put KVCC up 1-0.

In the sixth, Kristen Roznoski (Cardinal Stritch/Toledo, Ohio) doubled to center field with one out. Then, with two outs and Roznoski at third, Alaina Haubert (Gibsonburg/Gibsonburg, Ohio) hit one off the wall in left field for a game tying double.

Another huge play in the game came in the second inning when KVCC put runners on first and second with two outs. Olson then singled through the left side, but Express left fielder Kelley Molloy (Whitmer/Toledo, Ohio) gunned home to get the runner for the final out of the inning.

The game was essentially a pitching showcase as Ratliff and Heath dueled for almost eight innings.

Heath, now 20-2, allowed six hits and zero walks in her seven innings, while striking out seven. Ratliff was one run better as she went eight innings – allowing seven hits and zero walks while striking out two.

Haubert finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Hausch finished 1-2 with her walk off home run.

Owens is now 38-2, while Kalamazoo Valley falls to 36-5.

WP: Ratliff (18-1), LP: Heath (20-2), Offensive leader: Hausch (1-2, R, RBI, walk-off HR)

Owens Express Softball Defeats Jackson CC - Continues to Roll

In the first game of the day for the Express, the team defeated Jackson C.C. 3-1 behind a complete game performance from Elizabeth Weber (Oak Harbor/Oak Harbor, Ohio) and a three RBI day from Lindsey Bandeen (Springfield/Holland, Ohio).

Weber went seven innings and allowed five hits, one run and one walk. She struck out six and retired 16 of the last 18 batters she faced. The only two that reached were on a walk and an error.

Jackson took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a solo home run by Taylor Espinoza, who led off in the inning.

Bandeen then tied the game for Owens with a two out RBI single up the middle to score Ashleigh Whitacre (Central Catholic/Toledo, Ohio).
