OCCAC Selects Basketball Players of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Four student-athletes received OCCAC Basketball Player of the Week honors on Monday (Dec. 11). Lorain County Community College swept the D-III awards (Mike Rell and Angel Blakely) while Devon Robinson of Cuyahoga Community College earned D-II men’s recognition and Riley Culver (Edison State) was the D-II female recipient.

Culver pushed the Chargers to 11-0 on the season by tacking on two more wins this past week. She averaged a double-double, putting up 23.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game in the pair of victories. She shot 61% (11-18) from the floor overall and added five assists in the week’s first contest, a 74-59 triumph over Cedarville University JV. She is the first Charger to pick up the accolade since Sydney Miller since Feb. 19, 2017.

Blakely corralled conference recognition for the second time in the last three weeks as the OCCAC Player of the Week on Nov. 27 as well. This week, she dropped in 22 points and hauled in nine rebounds in the Commodores lone contest. Blakely also chipped in two assists while converting on 8-of-18 from the field, 2-of-3 from long range and a 4-of-5 effort at the charity stripe.

Lorain County has now represented the D-III player of the week in four of six weeks following Hannah Oehlstrom’s back-to-back distinctions to start the season (Nov. 6, Nov. 13).

Robinson returned to familiar territory, garnering his third career OCCAC Player of the Week laurel. He and the fifth-ranked Challengers improved to 13-0 after recording three more W’s in the last seven days. Robinson stuffed the stat sheet with 12.0 rebounds, 8.3 points, 6.0 steals, 3.7 assists and 1.7 blocks per game. His most impressive outing came in an 84-62 winner over Lansing Community College when he notched a triple-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals.

Cuyahoga extends its player of the week streak to three consecutive weeks.

Rell poured in 22 points in just 21 minutes during a 128-88 victorious shootout over the Community College of Allegheny County-Boyce. He was responsible for nine made field goals on 13 attempts (69%) in addition to two boards and an assist.
