General
Owens makes history twice this academic year
The Owens Community College athletic department made history twice this year.
First, two Owens Community College student-athletes were nominated for the NATYCAA Academic Scholar Athlete Award. This is the first time that any athlete has met the qualifications to be a nominee for this prestigious award. The Scholar Athlete award is based on two criteria. First, you must be nominated by the head coach and voted in as an all-conference selection. Second you must be an outstanding academic student with a GPA of 3.6 or better an minimum of 36 semester credit hours. The two nominees are men's soccer student-athletes Lorenzo Carrion-Bistolf and Jonathon Moore.
Lorenzo was nominated based on his OCCAC first team All Conference selection for 2009 and his distinguished academic qualifications of 67 hours with a 3.74 GPA.
Jonathon was also All Conference in the OCCAC and has distinguished academic honors with 60 hours and a 3.86 GPA.
The winner of the Scholar Athlete Award will be announce and recognized at the Annual NATYCAA Convention in June. Both student-athletes also qualify for the NJCAA Academic All American Award that will also be announced at the end of June.
Second, for the first time in Owens Community College Athletic history all seven intercollegiate teams qualified for the NJCAA post season. The last time that all the teams qualified for post season competition in the same year was back in 2003-04 and we only had six teams participate then. The college added Golf in the fall of 2005. The best finish for the post season was second place by the Women's Basketball and Softball teams. I'm extremely proud of all the Student-Athletes and the Coaches for their dedication to their sport's.
