2011 Cincinnati State Community College Surge Golf Team
Cincinnati State Golf Repeats as Region 12 Champions - Heading Back to NJCAA Championships

May 8, 2011 (Middletown, Ohio) - The Cincinnati State Golf Team advanced to the NJCAA National Championships for the second consecutive year this past weekend by winning the Region 12 Golf Championships by five strokes over Vincennes University and Schoolcraft College. The event was played at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown, Ohio and was a 54-hole championship. Cincinnati State was tied for the lead with Vincennes after the first 18 holes while Schoolcraft trailed by 11. Cincinnati State fired a school record 294 in round two while Vincennes shot 311 and Schoolcraft 317. 2008 and 2009 National Championship qualifiers Vincennes shot a very impressive 301 in the third and final round but came up just short as Cincinnati State clinched the event by shooting a steady 313. The final totals for the event were Cincinnati State 909, Vincennes University 914 and Schoolcraft College 958.
Cincinnati State placed its first three players on the NJCAA All-Region Team (top 5 players in the event) including tournament medallist Connor Stookey who shot 72-71-78=221. NJCAA All-American and 2010 "OCCAC Player of the Year" Blake Harpenau shot 76-72-77=225. First year player Josh Bialecki was third in the event with a 75-73-78=226. Vincennes second year player Chase Smith won in a playoff for fourth place in the Region by shooting scores of 74-83-72=229. Vincennes second year player Travis Whithaus rounded out the All-Region Team in 5th place with scores of 76-80-73=229.
The Surge will compete for the National Championship the week of June 6-10 at the Chautauqua Country Club in Chautauqua, New York. Golf Coach Scott Webb was named as NJCAA Region 12 Coach of the Year.
